| The
decision to perform a total joint replacement
is made only after other non-surgical treatments
and other surgical alternatives have been unsuccessful
in relieving the pain and disability. Based upon
the personal medical history and needs of a patient,
an orthopaedic surgeon evaluates the potential
benefits and risks of a total joint replacement
for that individual.
Advanced surgical treatment
from physicians you know
Regional Orthopaedic Health Care
surgeons perform total joint replacement surgeries.
Dr. Knox explains: "One of
the greatest surgical advances in this century
has been the total replacement of damaged shoulder,
hip or knee joints with smoothly functioning
artificial joints made of metal and plastic.
Nothing short of miraculous, total joint replacement
surgery gives thousands of patients - mostly
arthritis sufferers - years of mobility they
might not otherwise enjoy."
The total joint replacement gives
patients long term pain relief and restores movement
and function of the shoulder, hip, or knee.
Total joint replacement can, in
many cases, enable a person to resume performing
normal daily activities without pain or stiffness.

Recovery period
In most cases, the joint can be
used shortly after the surgery, and the patient
will be taught how to do appropriate exercises
to strengthen the joint.
The longevity of the artificial
joint depends to some extent upon the activity
level of the patient. When needed, Regional
Orthopaedic Health Care can replace the joint
prosthesis through a procedure called revision
arthroplasty.
